BUFFALO, NEW YORK - With the announcement today that heating costs may soar as much as 50% higher than last winter, some people are taking drastic measures to try and save money during these tough times.
Between the war in Iraq and two devastating hurricanes interrupting oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, average Americans are finding themselves on hard times in an already weak economic environment and facing what is predicted to be an unusually harsh winter.
"There’s just no way I can do it," said Theresa Cummings of Buffalo, "I’m already stretched thin as it is. I’m a single mother working two jobs and I barely get by now. There’s no way I can handle outrageous heating bills this winter."
Cummings has a plan however, "I figure if I can put on 50-60 extra pounds before winter gets here I won’t need to use nearly as much heat. I’ve already bought three winter coats for my son to wear around the house, and with the extra weight I’m planning to put on, I’m hoping to keep the heating costs down to where they were last year."
One Syracuse man told us he plans to check himself into the hospital every time a cold front comes through. "Hey, I got insurance, fuck it." The man, who asked to not be identified by name said, "I work for the city and I have great health insurance that I never use. I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it go to waste when I can turn off the heat in my house and drive my ass down to the local hospital with ‘chest pains’."
