Now we can fulfill our lifelong dream of downloading porn in Central Park in 40 degree weather. We kid, we kid. Seriously, this is a great thing and a move that has been a long time coming. The New York City Parks and Recreation Dept. and the Wi-Fi Salon are bringing free wi-fi to parks all over the city. The first free wi-fi hotspot went live in Battery Park on the Southern tip of Manhattan this past June. Starting from mid-October through Winter the city will be unveiling 18 new hotspots around NYC. With a 4 Mbps synchronous connection you should still have some pretty kick ass speed, for being in the middle of a park.
Here are the locations expecting to get wi-fi:
To Launch in Mid-October
Launched
1. The Battery
Central Park – Eight Locations
- The Dairy
- The Boathouse Cafe
- Summerstage / The Mall / The Naumburg Band Shell
- The Arsenal/Central Park Zoo
- Mineral Springs Snack Bar/ Sheep Meadow
- The Delacorte Theatre
- The North Meadow Recreation Area (above the Great Lawn)
- The Charles A. Dana Discovery Center
Other Manhattan Locations
- Washington Square Park
- Union Square Park
- Riverside Park at the 79th Street Boat Basin
To Launch Winter 2006
- Prospect Park –The Boathouse
- Prospect Park –The Picnic House
- Flushing Meadows Corona Park at the Tennis Center
- Orchard Beach
- Van Cortlandt Park – The Golf House
- Pelham Bay Park – The Golf House
I doubt these will get much use until next spring, but you can bet the parks will be filled with laptops next summer. Now we want to know when we’re going to make like San Francisco and make with the free wi-fi for the entire city?
