I was browsing over at the MAKE: blog and came across this link to a Japanese site that has literally hundreds of photos of every kind of cassette tape you could imagine.
This one caught my eye immediately. The 80’s Memorex design. I remember having tons of these tapes. Running home with my friend’s 2 Live Crew tape and dubbing a copy on my totally awesome dual cassette recorder with auto reverse. Damn, this Motley Crue tape is going to be bitchin!
Waiting for hours for by radio, radically designed Memorex tape loaded and ready with your fingers poised on the record and play buttons just waiting for your favorite song to come on the radio so you can get your copy. I don’t know, maybe that was just me, I was poor and my parents weren’t about to spring for any fancy Def Leopard album. Um, not that I listened to Def Leopard or anything. Shut up.
Remembering the first time you ever made that special tape for that special someone. You know what I’m talking about.
"There is absolutely no way I could ever begin to describe how much I love you, but this mix tape with these ten songs say everything I can’t. I love you baby!"
For some reason at the age of thirteen, making a mix taped seemed like the absolute best way in the world to communicate how you felt about someone. And most of those tapes were captured on the multi-colored Memorex tapes that were the coolest fucking things on the planet when you first laid eyes on them. Ahh, memories.
