Today’s cover of the Daily News shows the funeral of Police Officer Dillon Stewart who was killed last week in the line of duty. More than 20,000 police officers from around the country showed up for Officer Stewart’s funeral.
The News reported yesterday that even after Stewart had been shot and had a bullet lodged in his heart he managed to make one final phone call…to his home, his wife and two daughters as rescuers rushed him to the hospital.
Thousands of officers were expected at Officer Stewart’s funeral, but 20,000 showed up to pay their final respects to a man, who by all accounts was one of the good guys. Police officers traveled from as far away as Hawaii, Japan and Guyana to pay their respects.
A friend of Stewart’s recalled a touching childhood memory Stewart had once told him about.
Officer Alton Walker, a friend, recalled in his eulogy a story the Jamaica-born Stewart had told him about moving to New York as a boy. On his first day in his Brooklyn apartment, Stewart thought it was a mansion, and didn’t realize he shared the building with others until he visited the upper floors, Walker said.
"Dillon, as I stand here before you, I know you’re in the mansion you thought of," Walker said.
