As the deadline draws near, there has been no deal reached between TWU (Transit Workers Union) and the MTA. Yesterday, the TWU was dealt a semi-blow when a judge ruled that a walk-out by the transit workers would result in the workers being found in contempt of court and facing severe fines. We’re not sure how much of a deterrent that is, under state law a TWU walk-out is already illegal, but that still hasn’t stopped the threat. And really, without a strike, what real bargaining power does a union have?
The deadline for a strike is tomorrow night at 12:01 AM when the TWU’s contract officially ends. If no deal is signed by then, we’re going to try and be in the subway (most likely we’ll try to get to the Pacific Street station) and see if the workers do actually walk off.
We wonder how that works? Do the trains just stop where they’re at at 12:01? Do they finish their line and then just park it? One thing is for sure, if the city believes that the TWU is serious about a strike and willing to walk out, they had better be very careful. The TWU could literally bring this city to a standstill at one of its busiest times of year.
