Rumor has it that the MTA and the TWU Local 100 may be agreeing to a new 3-year contract today. It seems like maybe the strike had its intended effect.
The new contract 3%, 4% and 4% over the next three years. While workers will now have to contribute towards health insurance, the coverage they’ll be receiving is better. Word also has it that the MTA is now balking at their previous stance and now keeping the pension contributions and retirement age the same.
It seems like the new agreement gives both sides a little of what they wanted. And will allow both the MTA heads and the union heads to come away feeling victorious.
Which begs the question, why do we feel like the rising cost of health care is something that’s completely out of our hands in this country? Why are pharmaceutical companies being allowed to rape and pillage the sick and elderly and drive the cost of living through the roof? Just because someone is hiding behind a corporate logo, doesn’t change the fact that they’re robbing us blind.
