If you were on the 6 train yesterday you may have noticed something odd. If you’re like most New Yorkers, even if you did notice something odd, you probably tried to pretend like you were completely ignoring it, all the while wondering why the hell these people had no pants.
The improv group, Improv Everywhere, pulled off another fabulous mission yesterday when 160 people showed up on the subway with no pants. You may remember Improv Everywhere from their last mission in December where a suicide jumper took position and threatened to jump from an impossibly low ledge because he didn’t get a Christmas bonus.
Things got a little out of control, when one cop, who obviously was in over his head called in 25 more and shut down the 6 train while taking 6 of the 8 members who were caught into custody. The 6 members were handcuffed and taken taken down to the precinct where they were fined and released. The best part is, one of the participants who had been taken in and fined, upon being released asked a cop if it would be ok for him to ride the subway home. The cop hesitated and then said, "Yeah". So he a cop gave him permission to break the same law he’d just been handcuffed, taken to the precinct and fined for.
Let this be a lesson to all you terrorists out there. Do not try any hijinks with no pants on, the NYPD will be all over your asses.
Want to know more about IE and why they do what they do?
Improv Everywhere is, at its core, about having fun. We’re big believers in "organized fun". In the process
we bring excitement to otherwise unexciting locales and give strangers a story they can tell for the rest of their
lives. We’re out to prove that a prank doesn’t have to involve humiliation or embarrassment; it can simply be
about making someone smile.
Most of the members met at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre which specialized in long form improv, IE has set about bringing theatre to the people. It’s one thing to show up to a theatre and expect improv to happen. It’s another thing to show up just about anywhere, and have improv happen to you.
