Oprah is backtracking on her support of James Frey’s book. She released a new statement today commenting on what she said when she called into the Larry King show two weeks ago when James Frey appeared on the show to defend allegations that parts of his book were made up.
Frey and his publisher are slated to appear on Oprah’s show today to talk personally about the fictitious parts of Frey’s "memoir".

Want a neat little picture by your comments? Get one here.Dear James,
I thought you could use a friend. It’s been a rough week. As your new friend, there are a few things I want you to know:
I want you to know that A Million Little Pieces is a wonderful memoir
I want you to know that I think Oprah might have had a crush on you, since she was behaving like a wronged wife demanding answers
I want you to know that I saw her moisten her lips and adjust her posture for the camera as she attacked you
I want you to know that her concept of truth is funny. What does absolute truth mean, anyway? Does Nancy Grace tell us the truth about what’s going on in the world? Does the government?
I want you to know that I now see Oprah as a woman who took her fame and celebrity power to far.
I want you to know that she is, after all, only a talk show host. You, on the other hand, are a great writer.
I want you to know that your contribution to finding the truth, even if somewhat altered, is still better than Oprah’s attempt. How does she find the truth, through interviewing Tom Cruise?
I want you to know that Oprah looked like a demoralizing barracuda and she will, undoubtedly, lose many viewers for the way she treated you
I want you to know that anyone with any real knowledge of memoirs and the act of re-telling a memoir will agree that the act, itself, alters.
I want you to know that we, active readers, realize that by vocalizing or writing a memory, changes it.
I want you to know that we realize you’ve been wrongfully scrutinized – after all, what memoir has been analyzed so closely before? What a compliment.
I want you to know that I loved your memoir because it is raw and real and shows the reader that when you are in such drug-induced states, the concept of reality is questionable
I want you to know that because of your wonderful memoir, people can now realize that everything is embellished for entertainment, like reality television.
I want you to know that this controversy is not really about your memoir, it’s about the need for categories and the condemning of those that stray out of bounds (did you watch the American Idol episode where the judges made out-right fun of the transsexual? It’s all about staying in your category)
I want you to know that your memoir, as a re-telling of a life filled with drug and alcohol addiction, is appreciated regardless of what category it fits in
I want you to know your memoir is keeping people reading, which is important
I want you to know A Million Little Pieces is a wonderful memoir
