Well it was only a matter of time before someone filed these lawsuits.
In a federal class-action suit, readers said the book was a waste of
time and they should be reimbursed for the cost of the tome and the
hours they spent reading it.The plaintiffs, Jimmy Floyd and Susan Gardiner, accused publishers
Random House and Nan Talese of gross negligence for failing to
fact-check Frey’s supposed "brutally honest" account of addiction,
including an 87-day jail stint. "All they had to do was call the
Department of Corrections to verify that this guy was never in jail,"
said attorney Alan Ripka.Another suit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court by social worker
Jennifer Cohn, fumed that as a "health care professional" she
recommended the book to people with substance abuse and legal problems
because of its "redemptive theme."Cohn is seeking $10 milllion on behalf of consumers she claims were injured by Frey’s fibs.
Similar lawsuits also have been filed by readers in Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles.
For some reason, watching Frey spend everything he’s made off these books on legal defense would give me some sort of satisfaction.
