Environmentalists rejoice while fundamentalists weep at the announcement that the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of America’s freedom will be run 100% off of wind energy.
Last month, the General Services Administration, the U.S. government agency that oversees management of federal buildings and federal monuments, announced that it will be purchasing 100 percent of the electricity needed to light up and power the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and 22 other federal buildings — a yearly electricity demand of roughly 27 million kilowatt hours — from so-called windmill farms located in western New York, Pennsylvania and three other states.
While most of the power will be coming from the so-called "windmill farms" much of the power will be generated by Lady Liberty herself, by what some say are two very poorly placed windmills on the 119-year-old symbol of our national freedom.
The GSA insists that the placement of the windmills on Lady Liberty were purely coincidental and placed there only after careful calculation of how best to maximize the wind coming in off of the Hudson.
How will this effect one of our most popular national monuments? According the GSA, since the windmills have gone up on the world’s most famous statue, tourism at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty as nearly tripled since this time last year.
