UPDATE: Cops caught the coyote…he can never catch a break.
If you’ve been to the southeast corner of Central Park lately you may have noticed something a bit unusual, police helicopters flying overhead and trained sharpshooters lurking in the woods. No, they’re not hunting a dangerous criminal, just an elusive coyote that somehow found its way into Central Park.
“It didn’t look the least bit worried,” he said. “He leaped over the fence and disappeared in the park.” While coyotes don’t usually present a threat to people, Benepe warned that park visitors should keep their dogs leashed to protect the pets.
Officers did locate and shoot at the tawny animal as they hunted for hours Tuesday, but police said it escaped into a wooded area. Benepe said the creature would be taken to an upstate wildlife facility once it’s caught.
Cops are keeping tight lipped on whether or not the Coyote may have followed the Road Runner there. While it is rare for coyotes to make their way into Manhattan, it has happened before. In 1999 a coyote was found in Central Park and now lives in the Queens Zoo.
