The city is asking for $81.5 million in federal funding to create a “security ring” of cameras in lower Manhattan that will automatically take your picture, and scan your license plate. The NYPD then takes that information and runs it through an international terrorism database just to make sure you’re not a terrorist. If the NYPD can’t randomly take your picture, then really, haven’t the terrorists already won?
And if you’re not a terrorist, they’ll keep checking just to make sure you don’t have any outstanding traffic violations or out-of-date registration or license or any other of a number or run-of-the-mill infractions that might allow them to send you a nice, fat ticket.
What’s different about this scenario, at least from what I understand is it’s not like one of those cameras that gets triggered when you run a red light and takes your picture and sends you a ticket. This system will just randomly take your picture whether you’re in the midst of a traffic violation or not.
Welcome to the land…of the future!
