Administrative Law Judge John Spooner found that an Education Department employee was unfairly penalized for Web crawling during office hours.
The judge likened it to reading a newspaper or talking on the phone at work - and Bloomberg took exception.
The mayor said “nobody begrudges” a city worker from taking a phone call or exchanging an e-mail with a relative if that’s a “de minimis part of your day.”
“If you are spending hours on the Internet, yes, I think it is inappropriate,” Bloomberg said. “Why on Earth do you think you’re hired? Do you think your boss would let you do that? I don’t think so.”
First of all, the employee in question wasn’t even surfing the internet, they were playing solitaire which has nothing to do with the internet, so let’s get that straight. Second of all, this is the 21st century, and yes Mister Mayor, I think that my boss hired me to surf the internet. Browsing the internet on down time is like keeping your mind sharp so when that important task comes up you’re ready. Think of it like taking your brain to the gym.
