The fire in the warehouse broke out about 5:30 this morning. According to sources, it was a small fire that would have been incredibly easy to put out, unfortunately the firefighters took the G train to Greenpoint and by the time they got there it was a seven-alarm fire. Sorry, I just like making fun of the G train.
A warehouse fire on the East River in Brooklyn on Tuesday sent plumes of thick black smoke over the city that could be seen for miles as firefighters battled it from land and boats. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Two marine units sprayed water on the flames from the East River, while 45 fire trucks and 200 firefighters battled the fire from land, Kane said.
“We were standing here. A block away, you could feel the heat,” said Filip Mielnicki, 17, a neighbor watching the blaze with his friend, 18-year-old Wojciech Wasilewski. The teenagers said they believed the warehouse complex was soon to be converted to a park.
The three-story warehouse, on West Street between Quay and Noble streets, is officially unoccupied — though it was unclear whether squatters were living in the structure, which takes up one square block, Kane said.
Chris Gilbride, DOT spokesman, said there were no detours or shutdowns of any major highway due to the smoke. However, he said there were slowdowns on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the Kosciusko Bridge and the FDR Drive between 30th and 40th streets, mainly because motorists were trying to see what was causing the smoke. He also said the G train would be running its usual schedule and would be arriving promptly within the next three hours.
