subway-dog.jpg For a while now we’ve been hearing how NYC is due to get hit by a hurricane and this may be the year. Apparently trying to learn from the mistakes of Katrina, some top execs at the Transportation Authority are circulating a memo that would allow evacuees to take their pets onto subways and busses while trying to get out of the city.

And really, what could possibly go wrong with that idea? A bus full of panicked people fighting to get out of the city, cramming in with their dogs and cats? After about 15 minutes of crazed barking by Prince, the 85 lbs pitbull and the screeching meows of Bootsy the cat, the driver is going to drive the bus into the hurricane just to try and regain his sanity.

Of course there are rules. Pet owners must carry supplies to clean up their pets waste and dog owners must have a muzzle and up-to-date records of their dog’s vaccinations. Again, a flawless plan, while we’re holding up the last remaining bus to escape the city to explain to Grandpa Pearson, as he tries to board a bus full of dogs, that he has to leave his dog behind because he doesn’t have his shot records with him.

Rumor has it that the second part of this plan calls for actually bringing in added moving companies from out of state to help you pack and load all of your possessions before you evacuate.

  1. The Merritt Island Subway System is perpetually underwater, and in constant danger. [http://www.misubwayauth.org/html/route_map.html

Unlike New Orleans or NYC we’ve continually upgraded the pumping and water evac system in anticipation of the ‘big one’. Wouldn’t surprise us if local residents used the system as a safe haven during a storm [not advised, of course].
