In an attempt to repeatedly document his entire life Howell Raines, former executive editor of the NYT, has written another memoir. Should anyone really have more than one memoir? Get a blog Howell!
This memoir picks up where his previous one left off in 1993, the only problem is, what’s left out of the book makes James Frey look like a non-fiction writer.
Raines who was editor at the NYT during the Judith Miller fiasco and the Jayson Blair affair, conveniently skips over pretty much all of that info. Only two chapters of the 44 even mention Jayson Blair, the person who was basically responsible for Raines’ downfall after it came out that Blair was a hack plaguerist. The astonishing thing is, there is absolutely no mention of Judith Miller or the Times’ coverage of Iraq leading up the invasion. That’s sort of like Hitler writing a memoir and leaving out WWII.
I guess we shouldn’t be shocked though, it’s obvious that our media has been run by a bunch of spineless cowards for years now. Why should we expect any less from Raines’ own memoirs? Then again, you probably can’t listen to my opinion, I’m a blogger and never fact check anything I publish.
