If you’re looking for something to do this weekend don’t miss out on the opening of The Great New Wonderful, a new film by Danny Leiner. We got the chance to see a screener of this film and were blown away. The story is broken up into five vignettes that manage to seamlessly move in and out of each other. TGNW follows the lives of New Yorkers a year after 9/11. It’s a peek into the lives of strangers, but strangers that you really identify with.

Since 9/11 was in the description we automatically went in prepared for some cheesy, sentimental bullshit, only to find that it was completely stripped of any of that. TGNW manages to be timeless while being able to subtly bring back some hard and sometimes irreverent emotions that you haven’t felt since 9/11.

Not to mention this has to be one of the best ensemble casts ever assembled. From Olympia Dukakis to Tony Shalhoub, who plays opposite a fantastic Jim Gaffigan. Edie Falco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Judy Greer (Kitty from Arrested Development), Tom McCarthy and great appearances by Will Arnett (GOB from Arrested Development) and Steven Colbert. You could get this cast together to read the NY Post and it would be enjoyable. Imagine what they can do with a powerful script.

TGNW is opening this Friday at the Angelika, the AMC Empire 25 and Kew Gardens Cinema. I know it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to see Fast and the Furious 3, but seriously, you should check this movie out. It’s definitely one of the best, fresh independent movies I’ve seen in a long time. Click here to find out more times and places to see TGNW.
