There’s oil in that there burrough, at least in Greenpoint. Back in the day, Greenpoint used to be home to many oil refineries for more than a century. Although most of the oil companies have moved on, a few of them, mainly Exxon left behind their footprint. Most notably, a 50 acre blob of oil that leaked into the ground from underground storage tanks and continues to leak into one of the city’s water supplies.
While people have known about the leaks since 1978 it took until 1990 for Exxon to accept blame for a major part of the damage and 16 years later they haven’t even put a dent in the cleanup. Now the state and residents plan to sue Exxon to make them climb down from their pile of money and clean their fucking mess up.
