symbol_no_smoke2.gif Since Bloomberg has come into office he has taken some drastic measures to keep people from smoking in NYC. First he passed a bill that made it illegal to smoke in any public building or business in the city, an unpopular decision at first, but I actually think that even most smokers have gotten used to it.

Then NYC started giving away free nicotine patches to help people quit through NYC’s 311 help line.

Now a bill has been introduced that would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy cigarettes in NYC. As I’ve said before, I’m a new convert to the world of non-smoking and I have to say I admire what Bloomberg has done to combat the tobacco companies. I know smokers will probably hate me for saying this, but purely from a political standpoint, tobacco companies are some of the most evil fucking corporate whores on the planet. Content with lying and getting as many people as they can addicted to their poison, while they line the pockets of politicians who protect them.

I am not a smoker but I find this to be wrong. Im not against stopping smoking, but here politicians go taking away ANOTHER right for people between the ages of 18 - 21. I mean these ages are the bulk of our service men and women. If you are 18 you are old enough to vote and to fight and die for your country but according to politicians, insurance companies and any other control freaks, you arent old enough to make decisions for yourself. I wonder what the next right that the older generation of our current politician enjoyed will feel that our young people dont need.

  2. I guess you don’t see this is part of the ever growing problem of people losing basic rights. First smoking, then what? We already have our phones tabbed, bank records watched over, and more.

The right to smoke should be up to the individual.. as far as 2nd hand smoke.. There have been studies that have said it wasnt as dangerous as people would like to have you believe.

I’m a not smoker, but this is about basic rights being taken from us.

I think if people were as adamant about a socialized healthcare system, a decent living wage instead of a “minimum” wage, and standing up to the government backed pharmecuetical and oil companies raping the country as they were about their right to smoke a corporate sponsored deadly carcinogen this would be a much better country to live in.
