One of our biggest beefs with the new subway mashup maps that have been coming out is that they’re fairly unreliable. They’re not bad if you actually know the subway system and just need to figure out something like what stop is the closest to your ultimate destination but for overall itinerary, they’re pretty unreliable.
Where all the current interactive subway maps fail is virtually all of them have you taking unnecessary trains and transferring multiple times when, if you know the system, that can usually be avoided.
The MTA plans to hire a software company to upgrade its Web site to provide accurate directions and maps for any itinerary.
There will even be a phone number that will connect callers with voice-recognition software, allowing them to ask, “How can I get to the Museum of Modern Art,” and get door-to-door directions.
“The other Web sites out there don’t always give the best directions and don’t always include service changes,” one transit official said.
It will be interesting to see how the MTA or Trapeze software, the software company contracted to build the new site, plans on avoiding these issues. We’ll have to wait and see what the MTA gets out of their $1.3 million bid.
