According to a new study NYC street fairs are becoming “bland and generic, with the same vendors selling the same gyros, arepas and tube socks.” What kind of freedom haters are against us being able to grab a gyro, eat some mozzarepas and wear slightly comfortable socks?
The Center for an Urban Future, which performed the study of 367 fairs, says the lack of diversity can be blamed on red tape that makes it difficult for vendors to apply for street fair booths. The center recommends that the city lower fees to New York City-based artists, craft-makers and other vendors, who now have to pay about $100 to $400 to participate.
While I’ll agree that some of the street fairs could be more diverse, I do have to say that if anything messes with my yearly tube sock pilgrimage to Columbus Circle, heads are going to roll.
