wired.jpg Philip Chien a freelance writer for Wired News has been fired after an investigation into his stories failed to validate the authenticity of his source.

Chien, in at least three articles, cited his source as Robert Ash, a “space historian”. Only problem is when contacted, Robert Ash said he wasn’t a space historian and he’s never spoken to Chien.

[Wired News senior editor Kevin] Poulsen linked Chien’s IP address to at least one other Hotmail account, created under the name Robert Stevens, which Chien had provided to Wired News as contact information for Ash. The name and address were used in additional Usenet posts making positive comments about Chien’s work.

Chien has used Robert Stevens as a source in at least three articles published in two newspapers, which we have contacted privately. In each case he used a different description, variously calling him a retired engineer, a NASA engineer and an amateur astronomer.

Come on Chien, you big pussy. A magazine? You’re going to have to do better than that to get serious fake writer recognition after the boom year they’ve been having so far.
