Gone are the happy days when it was ok to openly criticize a divorced dad for running off with a younger woman while leaving his wife behind to raise the children alone.
Ford has gone a step further and started using deadbeat dads, portraying them as loving fathers and good friends with their ex-wives, to sell cars.
The Ford commercial shows two parents, two children and a dog spending a weekend shopping, driving and hanging out at the beach — but at the end of the day, the father is dropped off at his apartment. “Thanks for inviting me this weekend,” he says while hugging his children. “Sure,” responds his apparent ex-wife, perched behind the wheel of the Ford Freestyle. The commercial ends with the father waving as the car drives away.
I hope they left him with some Ramen noodles at least. Poor guy, getting dumped off at his shitty little apartment while his family cruises away in a new Ford Freestyle. The good thing about the ad is that it shows that while a deadbeat dad might be good for selling products, he probably can’t afford to buy them himself.
