Coming up on the fifth anniversary of 9/11 let us not forget those fateful words that appeared to be part of the glue that would help to mend a national wound, when in fact, it was part of wedge that would soon divide the nation and the world.
GEORGE BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: As we mourn the loss of thousands of our citizens…
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: President Bush, we can’t hear you!
BUSH: I can hear you!
(APPLAUSE)
I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you. And the people…
(APPLAUSE)
And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.
(APPLAUSE)
CROWD: USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
BUSH: The nation — the nation sends its love and compassion. And everybody that is here, thank you for your hard work. Thank you for making the nation proud, and may God bless America!
It seems Bush doesn’t have time to hear them now that there’s no good photo-op or soundbite to be had.
Nearly five years after 9/11, 72% of New Yorkers say not enough is being done to help Ground Zero workers battle their emerging health problems - an issue Mayor Bloomberg is expected to address today with renewed vigor.
The sense of anger over the slow-footed government response to workers’ health needs is consistent across all ethnic and geographic boundaries in the city, the poll found.
Happy anniversary.
