The highest ranking deputy mayor on 9/11, Joe Lhota, has come out and said that the time he spent at Ground Zero on 9/11 and the many days after, have caused him to become seriously ill. He also says that it’s a mistake for Bloomberg to not take better care of the city workers who have become ill.
Lhota says that his illness is too personal discuss but that thankfully, he’s been able to undergo many months of treatment and is doing well today.
Lhota works for a private company now, and his staggering health care costs were covered by his insurance. But he said the Bloomberg administration has been unkind about granting sick city workers who make modest salaries their pensions and benefits.
“I think there’s been a lot of pushback on the part of the city,” said Lhota. “I think it’s gotta end. It’s gotta stop. There’s a responsibility on the part of the city toward its workers, and part of its responsibility is to make sure that while they are on job that they take care of them going forward.”
