In his Sept. 10 column, Frank Rich of the New York Times describes a “taboo 9/11 photo,” one so “shocking” that photographer Thomas Hoepker didn’t publish it for four years. The photo… shows five people on the Brooklyn waterfront, engaged in conversation while the smoke from the fallen towers billows over Manhattan behind them.
Apparently Thomas Hoepker is an idiot. This is the “shocking” “taboo 9/11 photo” that he wouldn’t pubish for four years? We were expecting a fireman kicking someone down the WTC steps or something. According to Hoepker’s logic, since everyone in his photo isn’t standing at attention facing the towers they’re obviously thoughtless, no good youths.
We’re not sure what Frank Rich was smoking when he wrote about the photo but we want some of that. “Traumatic as the attack on America was, 9/11 would recede quickly for many. This is a country that likes to move on, and fast. The young people in Mr. Hoepker’s photo aren’t necessarily callous.”
Yeah, we agree Americans do have a short memory when it comes to trauma. But come on. Nobody in New York was “moving on” while the towers were still burning Frankie baby. It all seems like an unfortunate conicidence that Hoepker has a knack for capturing people in a way that looks like a Target ad gone awry.
