In case of emergency do not use the emergency brake. Why exactly do they need an emergency brake? They tell you not to use it in case of fire, a medical or police emergency. Why put it there at all?
The MTA’s website says this:
Use the emergency brake cord only when the motion of the subway presents an imminent danger to life and limb. Otherwise, do not activate the emergency brake cord, especially in a tunnel. Once the emergency brake cord is pulled, the brakes have to be reset before the train can move again, which reduces the options for dealing with the emergency.
It’s hard to imagine a situation where a passenger would have a better view of whether or not the track was clear than the train operator.
