After riding the waves of being the lovable idiot in Ace Ventura and The Mask and realizing he’s probably outlived his usefulness Jim Carrey finds out the hard way he’s really only one peg above Steve-O in the talent department.
In Carrey’s most recent public appearance he hit tennis balls into the crowd at the US Open, apparently after they couldn’t find a monkey in time to take the gig.
“Mr. Carrey has shared an enormous amount of success with UTA over the years for which he is truly grateful,” Carrey’s publicist, Marleah Leslie, said. “It was a difficult decision to make, but he felt it was time to move on.”
Two $100 million-plus productions that he was attached to — Fox’s “Used Guys” and Paramount “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” — were shut down because of escalating costs.
His recent signings have been for modestly budgeted productions. This week, he signed on for voice work on “Horton Hears a Who!” a computer-animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book from 20th Century Fox Animation, and this month signed to appear with his “Mask” co-star
Cameron Diaz in Focus Features’ “A Little Game Without Consequence.”
United Talent Agency (UTA) fired back with a snarky statement of their own, “Mr. Carrey has shared an enormous amount of success with UTA over the years for which he is truly grateful,” Carrey’s publicist, Marleah Leslie, said. “It was a difficult decision to make, but he felt it was time to move on.” Referring to Carrey’s 2004 critically acclaimed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which actually earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
