Yesterday we took MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow to task for overseeing a squandered surplus and allowing service cuts and fare hikes next year.
In yet another notch in our ever growing philanthropical bedpost Kalikow has responded by fervently denying those pesky rumors.
Kalikow said in a statement: ‘As I have always said, we view fare increases as a last resort, and if revenues keep pace, I just don’t see a fare increase in 2007.’
In the last 10 years, Kalikow said ridership on subways and buses had soared by 36 percent, or more than 582 million people a year, to 2.186 billion. However, the population of the city’s five boroughs has only climbed about 12 percent during that time.
‘Now is simply not the time to reduce service to our commuters, who have responded in such incredible numbers to the MTA’s service program,’ Kalikow said.
You’re welcome New York.

Want a neat little picture by your comments? Get one here.I hate the MTA. I think it is run horribly and if they have a defict, it is not the responsibility of the riders to go into debt to repair it…I am glad the hikes are not being rasied…at least for now anyway!
Some other dumb rules I read on Simpatico New York (Simpatico.NewYork.com ) about the MTA:
-No open drinks in the subway car… not even water! Fine: $25 How about sippy cups?
-No passing between cars Fine: $75
-No putting your feet up on the seat. Fine: $50
