05times190.jpg Jeffrey Johnson, the publisher of The Los Angeles Times was fired yesterday after he and his senior editor, Dean Baquet, publicily opposed cutbacks ordered by the paper’s owner, Tribune Publishing.

An editor, Janet Clayton sent out a brief memo to the staff making the announcement, “Sorry to tell you that we are told that Jeff Johnson is out as publisher of The Los Angeles Times.”

Baquet for now however, completely sold out the cause and agreed to stay on as one of the senior editors. Initially Baquet, and many other top staffers, had agreed to follow the lead if Johnson was fired or forced out (take your pick). It remains to be seen whether or not any of them will actually have the guts to drink the Kool-Aid.

Johnson’s replacement David Hiller assured employees in an email yesterday saying, “I read and love newspapers.” Well that’s a relief. We always thought Johnson’s illiteracy was holding him back from being a truly dynamic newspaper publisher.
