Chris Rock’s mom is demonstrating alongside the Rev. Al Sharpton outside a Cracker Barrel in South Carolina today because she claims they discriminated against her.
Mrs. Rock says that, for more than 30 minutes after she and her 21-year-old daughter sat down at a Cracker Barrel in Murrells Inlet, S.C., in April, no one would take their order. She says they were the only black customers.
After she complained about the wait, she says, the manager offered to comp their meals, but by then, “neither of us wanted to eat.”
“He never called over the waitresses and asked, ‘Why did these people sit here for an hour without service?’” says Rose.
While we have no doubt that it’s possible that they were in fact a bunch of racist crackers, your ideal of what you’d like to see happen isn’t realistic. No halfway decent restaurant manager is going to call over his/her server and chastise them in front of the customer just to appease them.
Sure being a celebrity’s mom you may have gotten used to some special privileges but having a waitress at the Cracker Barrel grilled by her manager for her incompetence in front of you isn’t something you should expect to happen.
Not to mention it’s called the fucking Cracker Barrel for god’s sake. And, it’s in South Carolina. You know, while South Carolina conjures up a lot of interesting images, racial harmony isn’t one of them.
