The NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign and Transportation Alternatives awarded the fifth annual Pokey Award, a golden snail on a pedestal, to the 14th St. crosstown M14A which averages a mere 3.9 mph as it creeps across lower manhattan. A pedestrian walks around 3 mph.
NYPIRG and TA also released a list of the 18 routes called The Unreliables. So named because often the buses would show up in clumps or have long waits in between when they were actually supposed to be there.
The M1 took home the most unreliable with more than a quarter of it’s routes showing up irregularly.
“You never know when these buses are coming or if they will arrive in bunched herds or wildly off-schedule,” said Gene Russianoff, the campaign’s staff attorney.
The overall average bus speed dropped from 6.6 mph in 2005 to 6.2 mph in 2006.
