Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan raked in $26.4 million over the weekend taking over the top slot at the weekend box office.
“This picture was playing to full houses,” said Bruce Snyder, head of distribution at 20th Century Fox. “The planets aligned, the moons aligned, the stars aligned, and everything came together perfectly for us on this weekend.”
Despite playing in only 837 theaters, fewer than one-fourth the count for The Santa Clause 3 and Flushed Away, which came in second and third, Borat made an average of $31,511 per theater. An extraordinarily high number compared to $5,784 a theater that The Santa Clause 3 pulled in.
Not to mention some readers have told us that in places like Ohio, they actually had to drive around to find a theater that was showing it. Many of the theaters that were advertising it weren’t showing it once they got there for some reason. You have to wonder how much money it could have made with a wider release.

Want a neat little picture by your comments? Get one here.you’re missing the strategy. the studio had no way of knowing how this film would do. the movie isn’t like anything else released this year (or really any other year) and who knew how many people would come out for it? if you keep the theatre count low, then you have an excuse when the movie doesn’t hit number one, plus it helps build excitement for the movie if people are being turned away. not to mention, seeing a comedy in a packed house is waaay better than even a half full house. it makes you feel you’re really a part of something.
