Goodbye unwanted pregnancy, hello unwanted STDs. Morning-after pills, also known as Plan B pills, will soon be available over the counter in NYC drugstores.
“There is a demand. But I think there’s lack of knowledge that this is now available as an alternative,” said Bill Scheer, chairman of the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York.
The OTC version of the pill is exactly the same as the two-pill prescription that has been available since 1999. The pills which are designed to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after sex, will be available to anyone over 18. Anyone under 18 will need either a prescription or a friend over 18.
Pharmacies can refuse to sell the OTC drug but in NYC they have to display a sign announcing that they don’t sell it.
