Growing up one of my earliest television memories is the ticking of the 60 Minutes stopwatch on Sunday nights. My parents watched the show religiously. I remember watching with some sense of childlike fascination at these men who wore conservative suits and seemed absolutely determined to get to the bottom of a story.

Ed Bradley always stuck out to me because he didn’t seem as rigid as the others. He had a personable way about him. A calm gaze, a confident smile and a fearless directness that was often off putting to the person being interviewed, especially if they had done something wrong.

Bradley was one of the first African American broadcasters on network television. He was in Vietnam when Saigon fell. He had a quiet confidence that oozed integrity and made you feel comfortable listening as he presented the story.

A commenter over at Gawker sums up the effect that Bradley was able to have on even the most jaded among us, “I’ve gotten good at pretending not to notice celebrities, but the night I waited for an elevator next to Ed Bradley, I was like a schoolgirl. The guy was a legend.”

A legend indeed. Rest in peace, Ed.

60 Minutes was all that was allowed to be watched when I was growing up on Sunday nights, 7pm. The good old days, 60 Mins, Murder She Wrote…

Ed Bradley will be missed, he simply can neverbe duplicated by the splicing/comment cutting scumbags on Dateline and 20/20.
