Yesterday we told you about Michael Richards losing his mind during a set at the Laugh Factory and going on a mind boggling racial tirade.
Last night around 9 we got this email from CBS announcing that Richards would make an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman trying to explain what happened and why he went nutso and to apologize, so of course we set our TiVo.
The problem with the apology is that it was nearly as disturbing as the actual tirade. Richard’s seemed awkward and unsure of what to say, and the crowd kept giggling during the first half of the apology because the whole thing felt like a big joke. Seinfeld actually told the crowd at one point to “stop laughing, this isn’t funny”.
During Richards’ rambling, uncomfortable apology he began talking about how blacks were still angry over Katrina and how his own rage is something he is unable to reign in.
There’s no doubt that Richards was clearly disturbed about what happened but his empathy or regret at the situation came off as uncomfortable uneasiness from someone who was just disturbed.
