Flying over in a helicopter rented by the couple’s family to search for them, Diane Guay’s brother-in-law spotted the sunroof of their white Mazda submerged in about a foot of water around 5 p.m. yesterday.
The car appeared to have crashed into a divider, slammed into a tree and then hit an embankment before plunging into the swamp, relatives said.
Skid marks could be seen on the roadway where the car careened off the road. Wrapped holiday presents were still inside.
Someone had called 911 on Thursday morning to report in Rocky Mount, where the car was found, but police were apparently unable to locate a crashed car.
“We were the kind of family that said, ‘I love you’ to each other every day,” Liendo recalled, tears streaming down her face.
“I’m thankful God gave my parents to me for 27 years.”
