news005a.jpg State Sen. Efrain Gonzalez has been accused of stealing $423,000 in grant money set aside for a Bronx kids’ charity. The stolen money was spent on luxury apartments, clothes, jewelry and, of course, personalized cigar labels.

The “worthier” causes Gonzalez helped out included the $50,000 rent on his wife’s apartment in the Dominican Republic. The fact that he, as a married man, did this while living with his girlfriend, who runs a not-for-profit group and is also defendant in the case, further illuminates his exemplary behavior.

Over the past five years, Gonzalez allegedly directed $467,000 in grants to Pathways for Youth, an organization that funds Little League baseball and a number of other programs, which he then rerouted into two other charities under his control.

“The senator designated hundreds of thousands of dollars of member-item money to Pathways, ostensibly to help develop programs for children in The Bronx. Unfortunately, the children . . . received no such benefit from that tax money,” said Rose Gill Hearn, commissioner of the city’s Department of Investigation.

He was previously arrested for similar charges. In August he was accused of pilfering $37,000 from Pathways and the West Bronx Neighborhood Association. This alleged crime was ignored, which secured his re-election. He was then given full license to do the exact same thing.
