New York Magazine reminds us why we pay $1,000 a month to share a shoe box with three other people, say “excuse me” to the human sized rats on the subway platform and love every minute of it.
Voyeurism. Only in New York can you watch strangers getting it on from the comfort of your studio apartment. “We live in the voyeurism capital of the world,” the magazine says. “Adorama Camera on W. 18th St. sells thousands of low-end telescopes a year, and those models ain’t for star gazing.” With 8 million crammed into the city, your neighbors are never far away.
Stunning waitstaff. “If New York is the flame to which scores of the world’s most beautiful, multiracial, multiethnic youth are drawn, then the city’s waiter and waitress ranks are its red-hot center,” says the magazine.
The delusion that city tap water is the best. “The fact that we’re wrong only serves to prove that we’re proud,” says the magazine.
The chance to see news when it happens. Witnesses to events such as James Gandolfini’s West Village tumble from a Vespa, the $95 million Sotheby’s sale of Picasso’s portrait of “Dora Maar,” and Lance Armstrong’s marathon run share their experiences in the issue.
Real gangsters more entertaining than “The Sopranos.” “Vile as their actions have sometimes been, it has to be said that as dramatis personae, they’ve rarely disappointed,” says the magazine.
A thrill a minute. There’s more to do on a single New York street than there is to do in most other cities.
