Since their disappearance on December 7, Rescuers have searched for three climbers, Jerry Cooke of Bay Ridge and his friends Kelly James and Brian Hall. Just before sundown on Sunday, they discovered one of the bodies in a snow cave.
Due to sub zero temperature and lack of light, the body was left in the cave until safer conditions permit rescuers to retrieve the body
The revelation came after a momentary surge in optimism just hours before the body was found. Rescuers grew hopeful when they spotted a giant “Y” comprised of ropes displayed on the mountainside, which they believed was an SOS. They only came upon the climbers’ equipment and sleeping bags. Later, a second snow cave was found, in which one body was discovered.
Crews intend to descend into the cave again today to bring up the body and determine the identity of the climber.
“This is extremely harsh news to receive now,” said Michael Jaffe, executive vice president of Countrywide Insurance, where Cooke works as a lawyer. “Irrespective of which of the three has unfortunately lost their life, we share the grief.”
