Michael Tsitsires has an apartment on 57th street that only costs $104, he just chooses not to live there. And he will continue to choose not to live there as an appeals court denied a landlord’s desire to evict him because it’s not his “primary residence.”
Instead of staying there, Tritsires, who is clearly mentally ill, spends his time within a 10-block “safe zone” around his apartment or in Central Park.
The 2-1 panel decision found his “homeless” lifestyle is the product of deep, longstanding emotional difficulties, fueled by a panic disorder and substance abuse problems. He is so far gone, his testimony had to be taken at a hotel within his “safe zone.” It was determined that, since all of his clothes and property are still in the apartment, he should be allowed to continue to live there.
Who knows, New York? Maybe bargaining with a homeless man for his rent-controlled apartment is worth a shot. Lascelle Wright, a former tenant, endorses the apartment as not the nicest but, “at least I have heat and hot water.” Sounds perfect. We’ll take it.
