Even though two guards were watching the safe at St. Mel Catholic Church in Queens during Christmas morning mass, thieves managed to slip past them and steal $30,000.
The two guards, Nicholas Mangino and Christopher Urena, insist that they had been deliberately distracted. They saw flickering lights downstairs and determined that both of them needed to go downstairs to investigate.
When they returned, only moments later, the safe was open and the small metal lockbox was gone.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said Turczany. “The money that comes in, it goes to needy children, and is used to pay the insurance bill - which is due next week - and the electric bills.”
The parishioners were outraged but, like good self-denying Catholics, swallowed their rage and prayed for the thieves’ souls.
Only one parishioner said what everyone was thinking. 81-year-old parishioner Dominick Foglio claimed, “if I catch the guy, I break his hands.”
Does anyone else suspect the two “security guards?”
