lily.jpg New York City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr said that he wants to ban pit bulls from New York when he forgot that they are living creatures and referred to them as weapons.

He acknowledged, however, that the way in which the dogs are raised determines their violent, aggressive tendencies when he said that they are trained to be attack dogs by gangs and criminals.

His proposal would prevent the breeding and selling of pit bulls in the city; people who currently own them would be allowed to keep the dogs.

I’ve found pit bulls to be very sweet and playful (though sometimes bad around other dogs). However, I am opposed to any dogs being bred and sold, as long as so many are dying in the shelter system. Therefore, I don’t mind so much the ban on the breeders, as long as they punish the people and not the animals. I hope it wouldn’t punish adoptions.

That said, breed-specific legislation is really dangerous, having the potential to cause thousands more dogs to be killed. We need legislation that makes it easier to keep animals, not harder.

I live in Harlem, near 148th and Amsterdam and own a yellow lab retriever who is very friendly. A group of young men asked me very kindly if I could walk along the other side of the street. I noticed one of the men could barely contain his pit bull’s excitement at the thought of eating my dog. Some of the other men said, “his dog will eat you and your dog, so go across the street”, almost if they enjoyed the thought of it themselves. I realize that not all pit bulls are dangerous. But, if the owner accidentally dropped the chain and the dog was set free, who is then responsible for reconstructing my face if I survive, and for the death of my dog? Do I sue the young man who probably has no more than 300 dollars in his bank account? Or do I sue the city which has deep pockets (thru you the taxpayer) and allows aggressive breeds to exist in the city? I can guarantee my attorney would go for the city..I also believe that a lot of the dogs are raised to fight for money. So, do you the tax payer want to foot the bill everytime someone gets malled by an obviosly aggressive breed? I’m guessing your answer would most likely be no!! Most people with pit bulls do not have them properly registered with the city, nor are they up to date with their shots.. So not only do you have the enjoyment of being shaken to death by a pit you also get extra diseases too!
