Although it was hard for him, Mel Gibson admits that his films are not violent.
His argument is as follows: As an adept director, he creates characters people actually care about; his strength as an artist only makes it seem like the movie depicts violent acts, murders or crucifixions. The audience, then, is mistaken when they see blood and pain on the screen. It’s all an illusion.
He said, “Everybody likes to beat up on me for the violence, but I think people think it’s more violent because I fool them into caring for the characters. When it matters, when they give a s**t, it seems more violent. When you’re watching Jean-Claude whatever his name is, you don’t give a shit. If you watch ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 4,’ you don’t care about the pimply teenager on the meat hook because you don’t know who he is.”
Come on Mel, we know you know his name is Jean-Claude Van Damme. Is it because his name is similar to “damn?” It isn’t even spelled the same.
