Ida Cocino, while practicing a new up-do on a doll, inadvertently set her Washington Heights apartment on fire, which ultimately resulted in the death of a retiree.
“I was doing my doll’s hair. I’m a cosmetologist,” said Cocino. “The blower got on the bed. The mattress went up. I tried to throw water, and the fire went out of control.”
She left her door open while she ran through the building, trying to warn all her neighbors, which allowed the flames to spread to the hallway.
In the tradition of all good retirees, Miguel Grullon assumed it was a practical joke being played on him by some youngster and would not leave his apartment.
To make Cocino feel even worse about her mistake, he seemed like a really nice guy.
“He was an older man. He was retired,” said Grullon’s housemate, Tavera. “He just played with the kids. He was a good man. He was a happy person.
