A New York staple, Vincent Sardi Jr, owner of Sardi’s restaurant and unofficial mayor of Broadway, passed away yesterday at the age of 91.

Sardi, who has been retired since 1997, died of complications of a urinary tract infection.

His clientele was not limited to the occasional tourist; actors, directors and agents were regulars and he made sure to make them all feel at home.

He always attended every production so that he would recognize the key players and know when to rejoice or commiserate with his patrons when reviews would come out.

Press agent Richard Maney once described Sardi’s as, “the club, mess hall, lounge, post office, saloon and marketplace of the people of the theater.”
