Forty years ago, models looked like Marilyn Monroe. Designers, when they noticed that everyone looked at the voluptuous models more than the clothes, decided to utilize models like Twiggy, frail and extremely thin, to serve as hangers for the designs.
To the detriment of the “average” sized woman, the size zero models became the norm and standard by which everyone gauged aesthetic beauty. People, as a result, took, and still take, extreme measures to live up to this impossible standard.
Attention has been focused on this serious problem after Brazillian model, Ana Carolina Reston, died from anorexia in November. Additionally, celebrities like Nicole Richie have shown the world that eating disorders an ever-present problem.
Now, New York officials are attempting to clean up this fashion industry mess of emaciation and eating disorders that resulted from the redefined, “idealized” female-form. While instituting a minimum body-mass index for models on the runway is ludicrous, they plan on insinuating workshops that promote healthy eating for models.
Although this idea is pathetic and they do not seem to know what to do with this desire to act, at least they are making an effort of some sort.
