Mayor Bloomberg, upset that it appeared New York was overlooked when Homeland Security funds when divvied out, implored Congress for money to protect transportation systems. Although he is a Republican, Democrats awarded the New York area $90 million in new grants, which is a quarter of the port and transit financing given by the department this year.
The biggest grant is for $61 million which was given to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to be used for training and other items needed to efficiently respond to an attack.
Congress tried to consciously allot money to high risk areas. They hope that by distributing grants to cities that people may actually attack, Government officials will be discouraged from spending, in the words of the secretary of homeland security, Michael Chertoff, “money on leather jackets or gym equipment or things of that sort.”
We guess we can kind of see his point, but is it not just as important for State officials to look buff, cool and other things of that sort? These measures are just as crucial to National safety.
