It seems like lead paint is something that the city has already dealt with. That is the case if you happen to be a New York resident with a little bit of money.
It has been disclosed that the city cited 900 apartment buildings in the Bloomberg administration’s Housing Stability program, used to shelter the homeless population, for countless lead violations. Of these, 700 definitely contain lead.
There are an additional 3,900 apartments in the program that were not inspected because the City officials only take notice when someone complains.
One mother, Jasmine Taylor, complained after her son, Jaylin, ate paint chips off the floor. An analysis of it found that he had consumed enough to stunt his speech and cognitive development.
Before the city allows people to move in, they are required to check the building’s safety.
“Our inspections include checking for cracked and peeling paint,” said Tanya Valle-Batista, a spokeswoman for the department. “If these conditions are found, we require the building owner to repair and repaint those surfaces before move-in.”
Considering that they found lead in 900 inhabited buildings, it looks like they are not doing their job too well. It’s just another way in which the city shows the homeless population that it cares.
