The man injured in the annual Coney Island Polar Bear Club public swim, Mohan Seneviratne of Esquire magazine, who was previously thought to be in stable condition, recently passed away.
He suffered fatal neck injuries when he hit a sandbar diving into the Atlantic.
A rival group to the Polar Bear Club, the Ice Breakers, held a memorial for him in Brighton Beach yesterday.
“He had his heart into doing something he really enjoyed. He needed to be memorialized,” said Bob Stewart, a member of the club.
As a result of his death, the Club has closed off membership in order to formulate a safety plan.
Louie Scarcella, the club president, said, “it has broken my heart and the heart of the board to do this.”
Previously, the club took safety precautions that included having Polar Bear members, some of whom are emergency medical workers, act as “spotters.”
Now, Scarcella has utilized a water safety company to advise him and may have to hire lifeguards.
Additionally, he has to scale back on the amount of members in the club.
Scarcella noted, “cutting it back seemed the first thing to do. I will open it up when we meet all the safety standards.”
